Highland cow family photos at Gather and Feast Farm in La Center, Washington
A summer family photo session with a Highland cow at Gather and Feast Farm in La Center, Washington.
A fluffy white Highland cow grazed in the middle of this family portrait while two little girls stayed tucked close to their parents in the tall summer grass. She did not need to look at the camera or stand in a perfect position. Her decision to lower her head and start eating gave the entire photograph its personality.
This family session took place at Gather and Feast Farm in La Center, Washington. The farm hosts weddings, private events, holiday markets, and seasonal gatherings, but the little family of Highland cows may be my favorite part of the property.
The open field gave the children room to settle into the experience without being rushed through a long series of poses. They could watch the cow, reach out carefully, and return to Mom or Dad whenever they needed a little reassurance.
Families searching for a Vancouver WA family photographer often ask for locations where their children will have something to explore. A farm family photo session gives them a real experience to respond to while I photograph the relationships unfolding around it.
Meeting the Highland cows at Gather and Feast Farm
The open field gave the children plenty of room to explore during their family session.
Gather and Feast Farm is home to Marshmallow, Mama Coco, Gandalf, and the newest calf everyone was calling Little Moo at the time of this session.
Gandalf is Mama Coco’s first calf and celebrated his first birthday at the end of March 2026. Little Moo was still waiting for an official name, and the farm had invited its Instagram community to submit ideas through a naming contest.
Each cow has a different personality, and that affects the rhythm of a photography session. One may stay focused on the grass while another becomes curious about the people standing nearby. The children get to observe the animals and decide when they feel comfortable moving closer.
Photographing children around the Highland cows
The children were able to approach the cows at their own pace.
Young children rarely need more instructions during a session. They usually need time to understand the space and decide how they want to participate.
The cows gave these girls something genuine to focus on. They could study the cow’s fluffy coat, watch her eat, and move closer when they felt ready. Their parents remained within reach, which created the cuddled-in family photographs that happened throughout the session.
Some of the strongest family photographs happen while a child is still deciding what she thinks about a new experience. A cautious look toward the cow or a hand wrapped around a parent’s arm says far more about that stage of childhood than a perfectly held smile.
Family photos with Highland cows near Vancouver, Washington
Gather and Feast Farm is located in La Center, north of Vancouver and close to families living throughout northern Clark County. The location works well for families coming from Vancouver, Ridgefield, Battle Ground, Woodland, and the surrounding Southwest Washington area.
The property includes open fields, mature trees, and long grass that photographs beautifully during summer. The light-colored Highland cows stand out against the deeper greens of the field, especially when the sun begins to soften later in the day.
A wider farm setting also gives us more variety within one family gallery. We can create photographs with the cows, full-family portraits in the field, individual images of each child, and quieter photographs between parents and their children.

What to wear for farm family photos
This family chose soft blues, pale green, and small floral prints. The colors worked naturally with the field while still separating each person from the green grass and trees.
The mother’s blue floral dress added movement and texture to the photographs. The girls wore light dresses that allowed them to sit in the grass and interact comfortably with the cows. Dad’s patterned shirt coordinated with the softer colors without making everyone look identical.
Comfort matters at a working farm. Children may sit, crouch, walk through uneven grass, or reach toward an animal. Clothing that allows movement usually photographs better because no one has to stop constantly to adjust an outfit.
Closed-toe shoes or boots are also helpful. The field can be uneven, and the ground may remain damp even after several warm days.
Gather and Feast Farm as an event and wedding venue
Gather and Feast Farm also hosts weddings, private gatherings, holiday markets, and other seasonal events in La Center. The fields and Highland cows give the property a recognizable character while still leaving room for couples and families to plan an event that feels personal to them.

Photography sessions with the Highland cows need to be coordinated with Gather and Feast Farm. The farm manages access to the animals and can explain which cow experiences are available, how children should prepare, and what visitors can expect when they arrive.
Planning a Highland cow family photo session
Highland cow family photos work especially well for children who love animals and parents who want a location with room to move. The animals bring their own pace to the session, so flexibility matters more than following a strict list of poses.
We begin with a plan for the family groupings and the best available light. From there, I adjust around the children and cows. A cow may wander into the center of the frame. One child may want to touch her immediately while another watches from a parent’s arms.
Those responses belong in the photographs. The final gallery records how the children experienced the farm at this age and how their parents stayed connected to them throughout the session.
