Senior Portrait FAQ: Everything You Need to Know for a Picture-Perfect Session

Are you or your child preparing for senior portraits? Whether you're a high school senior or a proud parent, senior photos are an important milestone. It's a chance to capture a unique moment in time that celebrates accomplishments and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Here are the most frequently asked questions about senior portraits, designed to help you feel prepared and confident.

1. When should I book my senior portrait session?

Late summer and fall are the most popular times for senior photos around Vancouver, especially for families who want warm weather, golden light, and images ready before yearbook deadlines. Booking during the spring of junior year or early summer gives you the most date flexibility, but you absolutely have not missed your chance if senior year has already started.

Spring senior sessions are also beautiful, especially if you want fresh greenery, flowers, or cap-and-gown photos closer to graduation. If your school has a yearbook deadline, check that date first and work backward so there is enough time for the session and gallery delivery.

2. Where should we take senior photos?

The best location depends on your senior more than whatever location happens to be trending on Instagram. Downtown Vancouver and the Waterfront work well for an urban or editorial feel, while Battle Ground, Ridgefield, Camas, and the surrounding areas give us fields, trees, trails, water, and plenty of Pacific Northwest scenery.

We can also build a session around someplace meaningful to your senior, including a sports field, favorite outdoor area, or location connected to a hobby. For seniors who want something more adventurous, we can look farther toward the Columbia River Gorge, Mount St. Helens, or other PNW locations.

3. What should I wear for senior portraits?

Bring clothes you actually feel good wearing. Senior photos are a terrible time to suddenly dress like somebody you found on Pinterest who has an entirely different personality than you.

For sessions with multiple outfits, I usually recommend creating some contrast between them. You might bring one casual everyday look, something a little more polished, and an outfit connected to a sport, hobby, future college, or another part of your personality.

Layers photograph well and make it easy to change the feel of an outfit without completely changing clothes. Jackets, boots, hats, jewelry, letterman jackets, uniforms, and college gear can all work depending on the senior.

4. How do I prepare for the session?

Preparation is key to making sure your senior portrait session goes smoothly:

• Get plenty of rest the night before so you look refreshed and alert.

• Hydrate and moisturize to ensure your skin looks its best.

• If you're opting for professional hair and makeup, schedule those appointments early, and remember to keep your look natural.

5. How long does a senior portrait session take?

It depends on the package. My Milestone Marvels session is built around a simpler experience of about an hour, while Scholar Snapshots gives us considerably more room for outfit changes, two locations, and different looks throughout the afternoon.

You do not need to know exactly how much time your senior needs before booking. Tell me what they have in mind, how many outfits they want, and how much variety matters to them, and I can point you toward the package that makes sense.

6. Can I include props or pets in my senior portraits?

Absolutely. A wrestling singlet, football jersey, guitar, horse, dog, truck, books, dance shoes, college sweatshirt, or whatever else your senior is genuinely into gives us another way to make the gallery actually look like them.

Just tell me ahead of time, especially if an animal or a location change is involved, because some ideas take a little more planning than tossing a football into the trunk.

7. How many photos will I receive?

My senior sessions include a fully edited digital gallery rather than making you choose a handful of images after the session. Galleries typically contain around 100–130 finished photographs depending on the session, package, location variety, and what we create together.

I would much rather give you a gallery that tells the whole story of the session than photograph your senior for an afternoon and then make you decide which five pictures of your own kid you are allowed to keep.

8. When will I get my senior photos?

Your final images will be delivered in a private online gallery once they are fully edited and ready. Turnaround can vary a little depending on the time of year, and I’ll make sure you know what to expect when you book your session.

If you have a specific deadline, especially a yearbook submission or graduation announcement date, let me know when you inquire so we can make sure your session is scheduled with enough time.

9. What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my session?

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. I watch the forecast closely leading up to outdoor sessions, and if the weather is truly going to make the session miserable, we’ll make a plan.

A little cloud cover is usually fantastic for photos. Pouring rain and sideways wind are a different story. If we need to reschedule because of weather, we will.

10. How can I use my senior portraits?
